Book Lover's Lunch Box

When I was in Wisconsin, my daughter and I stopped in at a local quilt shop (something I love to do when I am traveling) just to look around. We found this pattern for the "Book Lover's Lunch Box." Many of you have been asking if I had something like this. The pattern is designed by Carol Dockery from Quilter by Night Designs. It's a project that takes six fat quarters. Because my daughter wanted to make it, she choose the line "Peaceful Planet" by Studio E Designs.

Just look at how cute this turned out! It stands about 10 inches tall and it 8 1/2 inches wide. It's great if you wanted to slide a water bottle into it as well. It also has directions to make reusable/washable snack size bags.

This is another view, showing how easy a book slides into the back pocket.

Christmastime in Wisconsin

Each year my husband and I go to visit our daughter in Wisconsin. We have had such a great time with them. From baking to sewing to shopping, it's always just a fun week to set aside everything else and play together. Because they live so far away, it's nice to know that we'll get this time that is just us together.

There is a cute little town just up the road from where they live. Right by their city hall they had a Santa's Workshop, complete with Gingerbread men and candy pops all around. We had to stop and take a picture. Randy and Jamie are just goof balls, so they were playing around the whole time.

I had never seen a blow up Christmas decoration like this one. Loved it! I also loved that Mary has a little air belly on her right now. Jamie said she'll go back and check to see if the baby Jesus will be there after Christmas.

This was one of our favorite finds! I've had people in the shop show me this cute "Little Wallet" that Valori Wells has designed. We popped into the quilt shop in her town and found the pattern. We thought it would be fun to do a small project together. We had so much fun making the two reversed wallets, that we want to do more. Stay tuned, because this pattern is coming to Quilt Patch Lane!!

Christmas...

I love Christmas. From the perfect number of lights on the tree, the hand decorated cookies, driving around looking for the house with the most lights - it is all fun. I love how traditions that we started as a young family 30 years ago have shifted to my children. We always got new jammies for the kids to open on Christmas Eve. It's been fun to watch my three children do the same for their children. We also purchased a new ornament each year while the kids were growing up. They have these ornaments on their trees now, and do the same for their kiddos. It is hard to not all be together on Christmas each year, but I love waking up on Christmas morning knowing that some of these traditions carry on.

May you have a blessed Christmas and remember the true reason we celebrate is because of the Savior that was born that night.

New Line Coming...

We are so excited to be offering a new line by Lotta Jansdotter through Windham Fabrics. Lotta Jansdotter is known for her work with Rowenta iron and Martha Stewart. She was born in 1971 on Aland, which is a small group of islands between Sweden and Finland.

Her designs are fresh and have an urban feel to them. We can't wait to get this fabric in the shop for you to see. If you would like to learn more about her, please visit her website at www.jansdotter.com.

Pumpkin Cake

I have been thinking about all the wonderful food that we have at the holidays. Many things have changed over the years from the "staples" that were always on the table to what we have now. A new recipe that I have discovered over the past few years is a quick a simple recipe when you have an event, a potluck, a family gathering to attend and need something quick.

1 box yellow cake mix
3 whole eggs
1 can pureed pumpkin
2 tsp pumpkin pie seasoning

Mix everything together. Pour into a prepared Bundt pan and bake at 350 degrees 30-35 minutes until done.

One variation my daughter has tried when she is preparing the pan is to lightly sugar the pan before pouring the cake mix in. This creates a sweet crust on the cake. Delightful!
Another variation would be to try a different shape for a pan other than the traditional. There are so many out there - the one pictured is a castle!

This is one simple recipe! Enjoy!!

Quilting Community

I started thinking about the question: why do I quilt? Of all the hobbies that are out there, why did I start quilting. Then I realized I love how social it is. My girlfriend, who had been a quilter for years, invited me to come along to a quilter's group with her. I fell in love with the fabric and the amazing tops that were being created. Although my first block wasn't perfect, I loved the time I got to spend with the people around the room. Learning the stories of the women and about their families was so much fun. The community of quilters is amazing. Besides the learning that happens about each other, techniques are taught and "tricks of the trade".

I asked my daughter, who was moving away, if she would like to attend a beginner quilting class. She and her husband were moving to another state so he could go to school and I wanted her to have a hobby; something to help keep her entertained while he was studying. Little did I realize this hobby would aid in the creation of a community for her. After a few months she had made friends and they were coming to her house to sew together.

Thank you all for being a part of that in my life...whether you are local or in another country, you are part of my Quilting Community.

Berenstain Bears

I love the Berenstain Bears. I can't decide if it's because Mama always seemed to be able to do everything and loves to quilt or because they lived in a tree, but whatever the reason we read these books all the time.

The Berenstain Bears were created in 1962 by a wonderful couple, Janice and Stanley Berenstain. They worked with Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) to get their books published through Random House and have been an icon in the homes of many for the past 49 years.

This was one in particular is one of my favorites- can you guess why? With over 300 titles to choose from, it's hard to pick just one favorite!

I was pretty excited when I heard that Moda will be producing a fabric line using the characters from these books. It will be released at the Fall Market in Houston just this weekend! We're definitely getting this in the shop!

We use a border stripe for this quick and easy table runner.

Five seams and the top is together.

I was listening to the weather report today and then went to the kitchen to double check that it was really April 20th. As I peered outside, still hoping I had been watching a recording, I was greeted with white fluff all over my hyacinths. My poor, poor hyacinths...

I assume that I am not alone in my desire for Spring to really be here!

another jelly roll

Making quilts out of jelly rolls is so fun! They are quick and always come out looking like it was one of the most difficult quilts around!

Well, thanks to Betty Crocker, here's another "jelly roll" that is quick and simple too!

Rainbow Sherbet Roll

1 package white angel food cake mix

1 1/4 cups cold water

powdered sugar

1 1/2 cups raspberry sherbet, softened

1 1/2 cups orange sherbet, softened

1 1/2 cups lime sherbet, softened

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 15 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1 inch jelly roll pan with waxed paper.

2. Beat cake mix and cold water in extra-large glass or metal bowl on low speed 30 seconds; beat on medium speed 1 minute. Spread half of the batter in pan. Spread remaining batter in ungreased loaf pan.

3. Bake jelly roll pan 20 to 25 minutes, loaf pan 35-45 minutes or until top springs back when touched lightly in center. Reserve loaf pan for another use. Cool jelly roll pan 10 minutes. Loosen cake from edges of pan; turn upside down onto towel sprinkled with powdered sugar. Trim off stiff edges of cake if necessary. Carefully roll hot cake and towel from narrow end. Cool completely on wire rack, about one hour.

4. Unroll cake; remove towel. Beginning at narrow end, spread raspberry sherbet on one-third of cake, orange sherbet on next third of cake and lime sherbet on remaining cake. Roll up carefully. Place roll, seam side down, on 18x12 inch piece of aluminum foil. Wrap in foil; freeze at least 6 hours until firm. Remove from freezer 15 minutes before serving. Cut roll in 3/4inch slices. Store wrapped in freezer.

Mother's Day Strawberry Salad

What a delicious treat for Mother's Day! Try this Strawberry Salad, courtesy of allrecipes.com .

Ingredients
1 head Romaine lettuce - rinsed, dried and chopped
2 bunches fresh spinach - chopped, washed and dried
1 pint fresh strawberries, sliced
1 Bermuda onion, sliced
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 T. white wine vinegar
1/3 cup white sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 T. poppy seeds

Directions
1. In a large salad bowl, combine the romaine, spinach, strawberries and sliced onion.
2. In a jar with a tight lid, combine the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, milk and poppy seeds. Shake well and pour the dressing over salad. Toss evenly until coated.

Chocolate Mousse

Sometimes a girl just needs a little chocolate to go with her quilting projects. I made this mousse the other night. It's unlike other recipes in that it's not made with sugar. I've been eliminating sugar in my foods and I'm feeling great!

Chocolate Mousse

8 oz. low fat cream cheese

8 oz. low fat cottage cheese

1 1/3 C. skim milk

1 pkg. sugar-free chocolate fudge pudding mix

8 oz. Lite Cool-Whip

Blend first three ingredients in food processor or blender until smooth. Slowly add chocolate pudding mix until blended. Fold in Cool-Whip and chill for three hours. Sew while waiting. Scrumptious!

Tuesdays are busy around Quilt Patch Lane! I open my store on this day once a week from 10-6 for local quilters who want to see the fabric in person. I also host quite a few quilt groups and customers by appointment throughout the rest of the week. You just never know who is going to walk through the door!

One thing is for sure though: everyone is happy to come and that's the best part of my job. My little granddaughter pictured here loves to stop by for scraps for baby doll quilts!

We are so excited to share this picture with you. The top to our Block of the Month program, "I Believe in Angels" is complete. We are sending this off now to be machine quilted. Once that is done, we'll post another picture! How exciting! Remember, send us pictures of your quilts and we'd love to post them!

Block of the Month Update

We are just so excited about the Block of the Month program. Each month is eagerly anticipated, and so for your viewing pleasure we have the last three blocks shown here. Once we have the complete top put together we will also post that! Send us pictures of your Block of the Month quilts and we'll post those too! Heck, why not send us pictures of quilts you've made with fabrics from our shop and we'll post them on here for all to see!!

Apron Madness

My oh my! I can't believe how the months flew past. With the holidays upon us it was a busy time in life and also for the shop! We had a lot of fun with aprons this year. My good friend made aprons for her daughters and my daughter made some for friends and family as well. It's a quick and simple pattern called "Sunday Dinner Apron".

Fabric Princess

My granddaughter came over the "Quilt Room," as the kids call it, the other day. While I was working, she piled up some bolts of fabric in the corner, sat down and began to work ever so diligently on tying her ribbons. It was quite a sight and one that must be shared...

Crazy Times!!

Last weekend we did a show with the Washington State Quilters Association. We had a great time and got to see so many of our customers. These are a couple shots of our booth there! We'll be back again next year for sure!!

We have some great samples made up our quilts. You can see the Bella Blue "Country French" Quilt in the corner. Next to that are different samples of our "Strata Star" Kits. These are quick and simple table toppers fit for the holidays.

The brights we've got in the shop are so fun! This one showing on the far left is made out of Erin McMorris' newest line, Park Slope.

The whole show was just a blast!!

Here are a couple skirts my daughter made while she was visiting. She used the Amy Butler pattern, "Barcelona Skirt". This fabric is the patchwork pattern of the Sonnet Collection.

Everyone laughed at the green skirt because the pattern is grass...but what girl doesn't want a grass skirt you can wear year round?

Projects, oh sew many...

The two baby quilts using LakeHouse new collections, Little Lady and Boy oh Boy are finally finished...well, at least the tops are done, as for the quilting, that is another story. But, they sure turned out great. I love the little dresses and shoes on the girls. And would a quilt for a boy be complete without frogs?

I do like this one. It doesn't quite show the Illinois Road as much as its pink counterpart, but adorable nonetheless.

The next project of the day was just something fun (but aren't they all??). We took two pieces from the Taxi Collection by Timeless Treasures and decided to make a skirt out of it. We used a pattern we bought at Spring Market from Serendipity Studios.

The only thing left on this are the buttons and a hem.

Up next: Jungle Jamboree by Henry Glass. It's a quick and simple panel kit made with flannels. We have a pink toned panel as well. It's just the softest flannel. Great to work with and adorable pictures!!

Finished!!

We finished making the Frenchy Bags today. I loved using the same fabrics for different parts of the bags. I still can't decide which one I like best! Amy Butler, as always, did a great job with the pattern directions and these turned out great. If you've got the time, you could finish these in a day easily! Another great feature of this bag is that there are pockets on the inside attached to the lining panels. I love pockets!

We've just mailed out block two of "I Believe in Angels" By Anne Sutton for Bunny Hill Designs. But, for the curious at heart, here are pictures of block four and five.

My last post showed the beginnings of the Amy Butler Pattern, Frenchy Bags. Well, it has been a fun project and with these latest pictures, it actually looks like a shoulder bag and handbag. I love the Joel Dewberry fabric...

This one is the handbag.

My daughter has two good friends that just had babies within the last week. One had a boy and one had a girl. She picked out the latest kid pattern from Lake House Dry Goods. The boy collection is called "Oh Boy Oh Boy" and for the girls "Little Lady." She can't wait to get them started...more on these later.

Newest Project...Frenchy Bag by Amy Butler

I love Amy Butler patterns. This one in particular, Frenchy Bags, has caught my eye for sometime, but it wasn't until recently that we decided to take it on at the shop as a fun side project. Here's stage one of the project...we'll keep posting as we get farther along in the project, but we're making both the shoulder bag and the handbag...

We chose coordinating pieces from Joel Dewberry's Chestnut Hill line.

My new room

It's been so fun to watch this passion for quilting turn into such a great business opportunity for me. I am also reminded of how much I still love stash building. I am having the best time ordering new lines of fabric, but as you can see from these pictures, I am running out of room!

This room used to be my daughters bedroom...but no more! Now, it's my quilt room...she loves it though, and has insisted that I "do something about that pink carpet..."

Boys Will Be Boys

I took my daughters to the Spring Quilt Market this year. We had a such a wonderful time. My youngest daughter has two boys, so when she saw this panel she begged me to get it (with the matching Pigtails and Pixie Dust Panel to boot). I love this panel as a mom with a son and a grandma with five grandsons, but when my daughter sent me this picture of her four year old hurdling himself out of a tree, I couldn't resist sharing it with everyone!!

Apparently he loves to climb this tree in their backyard and jumps out of it to his daddy...Perhaps my next gift to this child will be a safety helmet...

I Believe In Angels...

This is the first time that we are doing a Block of the Month with our customers. We are using the "I Believe In Angels" Pattern by Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs. We have a special sneak peak of the first month below. We are shipping the first month out on Friday, August 1st.

And for those of you who are really excited...here's a peak of the month two and three...We are so excited to have this program going. We'll continue posting throughout the nine months.

On another note, I just returned from visiting my grandchildren in Wisconsin and when I returned the shop was FILLED with new fabric. Keep checking back on our site for the latest as we work to get it all online...and of course we'll write about all our quilting adventures here! Happy Quilting!

another day...another project

What fun we have had today. My daughter and I have been working on the "Darn Cute Bag" by Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs. It always makes me laugh when her and I work together. She chose to make her bag out of "Fresh Squeezed" line from Sandy Gervais while I work on "Simplicity" from 3 Sisters. Here's a couple pictures of our finished products. I suppose it shows our personalities a bit...

I am so excited about starting this blog. It's fun to show off the great new stuff we have coming in and are working on in our "spare time". I have ALWAYS loved Christmas and now that I have my shop I really start to get in the holiday spirit in July when all the new lines start coming in!
